- It's only one week (or so -- who knows anymore) into the new academic year and I am exhausted.
- As in, my eyes are burning to sleep while awake exhausted.
- As in, my head hits the pillow and I am out for the count exhausted.
- As in, the alarm clock sounds and it takes me a full minute to figure out who I am, why the alarm is going off and what day it is exhausted.
- There are damn good reasons for the summer academic break.
- Take that summer academic break away and you have me: exhausted.
- I thought that maybe it was just me blaming my crankiness on a summer lost due to the tenure & promotion ordeal.
- Until I stated, quite flatly, to a colleague (who also just submitted his tenure & promo app) that this year's first year medical class seems super-excited.
- His response?
- "Yeah"
- pause
- "But I don't care."
This, dear medical students, is why you have apathetic teachers. I'm beginning to understand the whole cranky professor thing.

Good luck for you and your colleague. It sort of gets easier, I understand, one way or another, but the tenure process is just nasty. Sorry.
Hang in there, my friend!
