Now For The 11th Day ...

My hospital has a wonderful restaurant that serves nothing but salad. It's a take-out restaurant and its only feature is a salad bar that offers fresh everything that is green and orange and red and good for you. It's expensive (around $9 by weight for a decent sized salad) but worth every penny. For years now it's been my treat to myself each and every Friday that I have been at the hospital.

Today was no different. Friday. I had finished teaching and was ready to drive to the University campus to continue work on my not-so-minor minor manuscript revisions. I paid the $9 for my yummy salad treat, hopped in the car, and drove to the University.

More often than not I eat my lunch at my desk while working. It's a bad habit, I know (as in: I should get out for lunch more often), but that's just the way it goes. Hence it came to be that I was eating my $9 salad while working on manuscript revisions. This meant that I was paying very little attention to what I was picking up with my fork.

Life was grand. My revisions were almost done, I was sitting in my kick-ass new office chair and I was munching on my salad. Munch, munch, munch .... crunch! What the .... ??! The texture felt wrong. Nothing that I had selected from the salad bar should have been that hard.

I fished around in my mouth for the offending piece of salad. I found it, pulled it out of my mouth and looked at it. With each millisecond that passed my horror grew. Between my finger and my thumb I was holding approximately 2 cms of a thickened, yellowish toe nail. When I turned it over to verify what my eyes were telling my brain, I saw that it came complete with sparkly grey nail polish.

I have to admit: I threw up in my mouth just a little bit.

Thus, on the 11th day of 2008, at approximately 12:42 p.m., my yummy $9 Friday salad treat became my $9 Friday disgust-o-fest.

A toe nail! With sparkly grey nail polish! In my salad! In my mouth! Gah!

I'm not sure what i was expecting but it certainly wasn't that. How disgusting!

Maybe you can match the nail polish to the workers there and see who it came from! :D

Ugh, that is revolting.

I don't even want to picture how it got into your salad.
