Conversations with Med Students

Some of them astound me.

Dr. K.: "We are meeting today to discuss the fact that you are consistently late. This is unacceptable behaviour from a medical student at this level of training. What would you like to say in your defense?"

Student: "Yep, this has been a problem since I was in high school. I remember my high school principal calling me in many time to discuss this same thing."

*long pause*

Dr. K:. "And?''

Student: "And what?"

Dr. K.: *trying to hide a visible sigh*

Dr. K.: "Let's move on: what are you doing to try to improve upon the fact that you are consistently late?"

Student: "That's a great question. If you have any ideas I'd love to hear them".

At this point I want to shoot myself in the head. It would be less painful.

And you teach, what, students from the top 10% of college graduates?

Imagine what the others do to those of us who teach all the undergrads, and then join in awe for the K-12 teachers who teach the ones who REALLY don't want to be there!

Oh jeez. A few people in my class have a similar problem. It really bothers those of us who are so paranoid we're 15 minutes early for everything. I have a suggestion: set your watch and clock 10 minutes early.

In all fairness, the doctor I work for shows up a minimum of 20 minutes after the first person is scheduled.

Sorry I just always have to play devil's advocate for the students, since I am one.

Quite true. I have sat there for half an hour (with patients banking up) while the doctor debates which merlot with his wine club salesman over the phone. Or various others. I hope I don't do anything like that when working but definitely would be mortified if I was running late now as a student.
